The name has two familiar readings: valley of tranquillity and valley of great meadows. Neither interpretation is universally accepted.
What the distillery has been using for a long time is tranquility. However, that is a choice and not a decision.
The distillery's first still was a second-hand one from a gin distillery in London. Its unusually elongated shape has determined the character of this whisky to this day.
The boiling wash repeatedly meets copper, which helps reduce sulphury notes before vapour reaches the tall neck.
The swelling beneath the neck expands the vapour path and encourages some of it to condense and return.
The unusually tall neck gives rising vapour repeated chances to cool, fall and boil again, favouring a lighter and more delicate spirit.
Condensed liquid returns to the pot and is boiled again. More of these cycles shifts the spirit towards a cleaner, lighter character.
Vapour that reaches the top crosses to the condenser. Its journey reflects repeated reflux, not a literal filter that admits only “light molecules”.
Less than a third of the second distillation is collected as the heart for maturation; the rest is separated for redistillation.

It is a long shape extending down the left. The floral and vanilla axes have grown almost all the way and the sherry and peat axes are folded.
This shape is difficult to explain with just the cask. Although the bourbon cask contributes greatly to the vanilla flavor, it is difficult to explain the floral aroma of this bottle through the cask alone. The increased reflux from the long neck creates the basis for a light and delicate liquid.
If you overlap Dalmore's shapes, they are tilted almost in the opposite direction. The two distilleries are in the same region, in the same Highlands, and are less than 30 kilometers apart. It was not the land that made the difference, but the shape.
Glenmorangie is located in Tain, facing the Firth of Donoch. It is located not far north of Dalmore, and the two whiskys have almost opposite characteristics. This is a representative example of regional classification not explaining the taste.
Water comes from Talogi spring. Because it has passed through limestone and sandstone for a long time, it is hard water with many minerals, which is the opposite of the soft water used by most distilleries. In the 1980s, when water quality was threatened by surrounding development, the distillery purchased the entire land around the spring.
Glenmorangie actively used cask finishes from an early age. The spirit from the long neck is light and clean, allowing it to clearly pick up the scent of other casks. First, the distiller creates the character of the spirit, and then the cask adds new flavors.
The second part of the name has more than one plausible reading, and no single interpretation is definitive.
